BIB System
The BioEnterics Intragastric Balloon (BIB) System is a way of non-operative, non-pharmacological obesity treatment. It is designed for temporary use for weight loss in moderately and very obese patients, in whom the obesity represents a huge risk for health, and who could not manage to regulate body mass in any other way.
It is also indicated in very obese patients that are subjected to surgical obesity treatment for weight loss, by which the operative risk is reduced.
Objective
Weight loss
Technique
First, a gastroscopic examination of the oesophagus and the stomach is performed in order to exclude the existence of counter-indications for balloon embedding (ulcer, hiatus hernia). Then the balloon is inserted into the stomach and filled with sterile physiological solution (400 to 700 ml) in order to ensure a sufficient “pressure” on the stomach walls and thus provide a constant sense of saturation.
Duration and anaesthesia
The procedure usually lasts some 20 minutes and is performed in mild sedation.
Side effects
Nausea, loathing and, rarely, vomiting can occur during the first several days after the intervention.
