Abdominal Skin Tightening
Operation Description
Abdominal skin tightening is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess skin and fatty tissue from the abdominal area while simultaneously improving abdominal contour and firmness. Skin laxity most commonly develops after significant weight loss, pregnancy, or as part of the natural aging process, when the skin gradually loses its ability to retract and maintain elasticity.
At Colić Special Hospital, the approach to this procedure is individualized and tailored to each patient’s anatomy and aesthetic goals. Depending on the degree of skin laxity, the amount of excess tissue, and skin quality, the procedure may include elements of abdominoplasty and dermolipectomy in order to achieve a firmer, flatter, and more naturally contoured abdomen.
The course of the procedure is carefully planned during consultations with the surgeon, when the amount of skin and fatty tissue that can be removed, as well as the expected results, are evaluated. Candidates
Candidates for abdominal skin tightening are individuals who:
- Have excess and sagging skin in the abdominal area after significant weight loss
- Notice pronounced abdominal changes after pregnancy and childbirth
- Have weakened abdominal wall firmness and excess skin that cannot be improved through diet and exercise
- Desire a firmer and more defined abdominal contour
The procedure is not recommended for individuals planning pregnancy in the near future or patients with serious medical conditions that may increase surgical risk.
Preparation
Before the procedure, patients undergo a detailed examination, consultation with the surgeon, and necessary laboratory testing and preoperative preparation. Patients are advised to stop smoking at least one month before surgery, as nicotine may slow healing and increase the risk of complications. In addition, medications and supplements that affect blood clotting, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and certain herbal products, should be discontinued two weeks prior to surgery. During consultations, the doctor will provide individualized instructions regarding medications, nutrition, and preparation for the procedure.
Operation time
Abdominal skin tightening is performed under general anesthesia. The incision is most commonly placed horizontally in the lower abdomen, in an area that can typically be concealed by underwear or swimwear. After removing excess skin and fatty tissue, the abdominal area may be additionally contoured if necessary, and the belly button repositioned in order to achieve a natural and proportional appearance. At the end of the procedure, the incision is carefully closed with sutures. The surgery usually lasts between 2 and 4 hours, depending on the extent of the procedure.
Recovery
After the procedure, drains are placed and are usually removed several days after surgery, depending on the surgeon’s assessment. Patients remain in the hospital for a short period for monitoring and postoperative recovery.
During the first few days after surgery, sensations of tightness, mild discomfort, swelling, and bruising are expected and gradually decrease over the following weeks. Sutures are removed 10 to 14 days after surgery. During the first month, patients should avoid physical strain, heavy lifting, and intense activities. Wearing a special compression garment for several weeks after surgery is also recommended in order to reduce swelling and support proper contouring of the treated area. Most patients gradually return to their daily activities in accordance with the surgeon’s recommendations.
Safety precautions
As with any surgical procedure, there are certain risks and possible complications, although they are rare when the procedure is performed with proper preparation and professional medical supervision. Possible side effects include swelling, hematoma, temporary numbness of the skin, a feeling of tightness, or slower wound healing. Less common complications include infection, irregular scarring, or fluid accumulation. To ensure the safest possible recovery, it is very important for patients to carefully follow all postoperative instructions, attend regular follow-up appointments, and avoid activities that may strain the treated area.
